Basketball Falls In Home Opener To Samford, 52-33

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped a 52-33 decision to visiting Samford in the home opener, Monday, at Reed Green Coliseum.
Southern Miss fell to 1-3 overall with the loss, dropping its third game in a row since opening the season with a 79-76 win over Lamar on Nov. 18. Samford improved to 3-2 overall.
David Cornwell was the lone Golden Eagle in double figures, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 2-of-2 from the line in his first career start. Shaun Simpson followed with seven points.
The Golden Eagles opened the game with a 16-15 advantage at the break, but it was the Bulldogs who had the hot shooting spree in the second half, connecting on 13-of-23 field goals and 6-of-11 from behind the 3-point line, to outscore Southern Miss 37-17 in the period.
For Samford, J. Robert Merritt had a game-high 15 points, while Jerry Smith and Travis Peterson followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Following Cornwell and Simpson, Courtney Beasley added six points. Mildon Ambres had a game-high six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles now travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the University of Arkansas at 8:05 p.m., CT. The game was changed from its original starting time to 8:05 p.m., CT, to accommodate Fox Sports Net, who will carry the game live.
