Baseball Announces Sixth Signee Of Spring Period
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Rob Burns, a 5-10, 185-pound left-handed pitcher from Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Ala., to a letter of intent for the 2004-05 academic year. This marks the sixth signee of the spring period and the 13th signee overall for the year, including the early signing period.
"Rob will come in and give us relief help from the left side," Palmer said. "We have been building depth on our pitching staff this year, and he gives us another left-handed pitcher to add to the staff. He throws three pitches for strikes, a fastball, changeup and curve."
Burns, who hails from Tuscaloosa, Ala., was a two-year starter for Coach Bobby Sprowl at Shelton State CC. As a sophomore this past season, he finished with a 4-6 record and a 4.60 ERA in 72.1 innings pitched and struck out 63 batters, while walking 38. Opponents hit .181 against him. He was named second-team all-region this past year. He posted a career-high 11 strikeouts against Alabama Southern on March 13. Burns helped lead Shelton State to a 31-28 record this past season and the Alabama Community College Conference Championship.
Burns was a four-year letterwinner for Coach John Cameron at Central Tuscaloosa High School. As a senior, he finished 10-0, named the team's most valuable player and was the Tuscaloosa News 6A Player of the Year. He helped lead Central Tuscaloosa to consecutive area championships as a junior and senior. He was selected to play in the Alabama East/West All-Star Game as a senior.
