Southern Miss And UAB Baseball Split Doubleheader On Saturday
? Southern Miss? Jason Lowery?s single to left plated Carlos Velasquez from second in the eighth inning to give the Golden Eagles a 7-6 victory in game two of the doubleheader over UAB, today, at Young Memorial Field. UAB won the first game, 14-5.
In game two, Adam Smith (1-1) received his first win of the season, pitching two innings of relief, giving up one unearned run on three hits and struck out three. Austin Tubb (6) earned his sixth save of the season, pitching the final two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one. Cole Helms (2-2) took the loss, pitching the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit, two walks and one strikeout.
In game one, UAB pitcher Adam Price (4-5) threw a complete-game victory, gave up five runs on 13 hits, walked three and struck out four in earning his fourth win of the season. UAB was paced by three doubles, a triple and four home runs. The Blazers scored five runs in the third inning and exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning to account for most of their offense. Southern Miss? Daniel Best dropped his third decision of the season, giving up seven runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out four.
In game two, UAB tied the game at 6-6 in the sixth inning, scoring two unearned runs on a throwing error by Southern Miss relief pitcher Adam Smith to tie the game at 6-6. The Blazer had a runner on third with no outs when Tubb came on in relief of Smith. He struck out Josh Miljavanic, forced Eugene Rodriguez to ground out and Daniel Hill to fly out to center to get out of the jam.
Southern Miss finished with seven runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, while UAB scored six runs on 14 hits. Matt Shepherd, Velasquez and Lowery led the Golden Eagles with two hits each. Lowery hit a two-run homer in the second inning and finished with three RBIs. UAB?s Sam Clark finished with four hits to lead the Blazers.
Hill hit a solo homer to right center with two outs in the first to give UAB the early 1-0 lead. Lowery?s two-run homer in the second gave Southern Miss the one-run lead. Southern Miss added three more runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Shepherd and Maddox led off with singles and Hoffpauir flew out to center to plate Shepherd from third. A single by Velasquez and a double from Ryan Frith plated Maddox and Willcutt for the second and third runs of the inning.
UAB struck back with two in the third off a Nathan McCorkle two-run homer over right center, cutting the Southern Miss lead to 5-3. The Golden Eagles added a solo homer by Kevin Coker in the fourth to push their lead to 6-3.
UAB added a single run in the fifth inning to cut the lead by one more, 6-4, and then the Smith error allowed two more runs to score to tie the game in the sixth inning.
In game one, Southern Miss took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning, but UAB exploded for five runs in the third inning, a single run in the fourth and sixth innings and seven runs in the eighth inning to send the Golden Eagles to a 14-5 loss.
In the five-run third for the Blazers, Eugene Rodriguez hit a three-run homer to right field, followed by a solo blast from Hill to right center and then a third solo homer over right field by McCorkle. Jeremy Moran hit a solo homer in the sixth inning. In the seven-run seventh inning, UAB was paced by Rodriguez?s two-run double and doubles by Cole Helms and Seth Rollin.
UAB finished with 14 runs on 16 hits, while Southern Miss scored five runs on 13 hits. Miljavac and Hill led the Blazers with three hits each, while Willcutt led Southern Miss with four hits.
