Baseball Travels To Southeastern Louisiana For Midweek Game
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The (No. 12 BA/No. 13 SW-ESPN/No. 13 NCBWA/No. 20 CB) Southern Miss baseball team will travel to Hammond, La., to take on Southeastern Louisiana, Tuesday, April 12, at 6:30 pm. The Golden Eagles are coming off a three-game weekend sweep at Saint Louis, while the Lions won two-of-three games at Louisiana-Monroe.
Southern Miss (27-6, 10-2 Conference USA) will send sophomore righthander Daniel Best to the mound. Best enters the game with a 2-2 record and a 5.88 ERA. He has pitched 33.2 innings, giving up 22 earned runs on 43 hits, striking out 29 and walking 13. Opponents are hitting .305 against him.
Southeastern Louisiana (10-20, 5-7 Southland) will send lefthander Rodney Story to the mound. He is 1-5 with a 3.48 ERA. In 41.1 innings pitched, he has allowed 16 earned runs on 43 hits, struck out 28 and has walked 17. Opponents are hitting .261 against him, and he has pitched one complete game shutout this season.
The Golden Eagles are led offensively by junior second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir, who is hitting .430. He also has 14 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and a team-best 57 RBIs. His slugging percentage is .690, and his on-base percentage is .448. Junior shortstop Matt Shepherd is second in batting (.427) with a team-high 17 doubles, five triples, two home runs and 28 RBIs. Shepherd has a slugging percentage of .657 and an on-base percentage of .503. Sophomore first baseman Marc Maddox is hitting .361 with eight doubles, two doubles, nine home runs and 42 RBIs. He has a .632 slugging percentage and a .443 on base percentage.
Senior left fielder Carlos Velasquez, the current Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week, is hitting .355 with six doubles, one triple, six home runs and 26 RBIs. Velasquez has a slugging percentage of .570 and an on-base percentage of .444. Senior rightfielder Ryan Frith is hitting .349 with eight doubles, to go along with a team-high 13 home runs and 34 RBIs. His slugging percentage is a team-high .713, while his on-base percentage is .433. The Golden Eagles are hitting .333 as a team with 75 doubles, 13 triples, 54 homeruns and 278 RBIs. Southern Miss has an on-base percentage of .417 and a slugging percentage of .552.
Southeastern Louisiana is led offensively by first baseman Corey Penedo, who is hitting .333, including five doubles, three home runs and 13 RBIs. His slugging percentage is .536, while his on- base percentage is .425. Second baseman Jimmy Bertelson is hitting .329, including four doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs. His slugging percentage is .421 and his on-base percentage is .409. Third baseman Anthony Garibaldi is hitting .303, including five doubles, five home runs and 10 RBIs. He has a slugging percentage of .467 and his on-base percentage is .360. As a team, the Lions are hitting .264, with 51 doubles, eight triples, 20 home runs and 130 RBIs. They have a slugging percentage of .388 and have an on base percentage of .343.
Following Tuesday night?s game at Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss will entertain the Memphis Tigers for a three-game Conference USA weekend series. Friday?s game is set for 6:30 p.m., Saturday?s at 4 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
