Frith Named NCBWA National Co-Hitter Of The Week
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss senior outfielder Ryan Frith not only has been named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week but also was named the National Co-Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association for the week ending March 7. This marks the first national honor given to a Golden Eagle baseball player this season.The Golden Eagles finished with a 5-0 record for the week after defeating Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday, 10-3, and Wednesday, 11-5. Southern Miss won the Cox Communications/Lake Area Classic hosted by McNeese State over the weekend, defeating Indiana State on Friday, 3-1, Oklahoma State on Saturday, 21-5, and 6-5 in 10 innings over host, McNeese State.
Frith hit .571 (12/21) for the week with two doubles, four home runs and drove in 10 runs. He had an on-base percentage of .591 and a slugging percentage of 1.238. He scored 11 runs, was hit by a pitch and was perfect in the field (8 putouts/1 assist). Twice during the week, he had back-to-back games with a homer.
In Tuesday's game against Louisiana-Monroe, Frith was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run, scored two runs and drove in two. He came back with a 3-for-4 performance in Wednesday's game against ULM, with another home run and drove in two runs and scored three runs.
After going hitless against Indiana State on Friday, he was 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, scored four runs and drove in four runs against Oklahoma State. He finished out the week with a 2-for-5 performance against McNeese State with a home run, scored a run and drove in two runs.
As a team, Southern Miss hit .353 for the week with 13 doubles, three triples and 11 home runs. The pitching staff finished with a 2.93 ERA in 46 innings of work, struck out 41, walked 17 and opponents hit .251 against them.
Southern Miss travels to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for a 6:30 p.m., contest against Alabama on Wednesday, March 10. The Golden Eagles host Eastern Illinois at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field for a three-game weekend series. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 3 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
Ole Miss' Stephen Head also was named National Co-Hitter of the Week. He set a school record when he reached base safely in 16 consecutive plate appearances (nine hits, seven walks) dating back from the ninth inning of last Sunday?s game at South Alabama through his first plate appearance in Saturday?s nightcap against Eastern Illinois. He finished the week, 9-for-15 (.600) with four home runs, 11 RBIs, 11 runs scored and also drew seven walks in five games. The sophomore from Raymond, Miss., recorded a four-RBI game in the 15-6 win over Southeast Missouri State on Wednesday and in the 18-10 victory over Eastern Illinois on Sunday. LSU's Clay Dirks and Kansas State's Jim Ripley were named the National Co-Pitchers of the Week.
