Eagle Golfers Are 4th At Puerto Rico Tournament
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss shot an opening round 300 today and is in fourth place in the seven-team field at the Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate being played in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
No. 21 Kentucky, the highest ranked team entering the tournament by Golfweek, shot 296 on the first day of play to grab first place in the three-day, 54-hole event. Georgia State trails by only a stroke after carding 297 today, and Baylor shot 298 for third. Southern Miss is in fourth, Vanderbilt is fifth at 306, Georgia Southern sixth at 311 and Old Dominion seventh at 313.
For Southern Miss, Matt Wofford led the way with a 3-under-par 69. Shane Rushing shot an opening-day 75, Danny Dennis a 78, Ben Snow matched that 78 and Michael Soroka had an 83.
"This is a good trip for our team," said Head Coach Steve Johnson. "We started poorly today, but got things somewhat under control as the round progress, and I was proud of the way we fought back. The course we're playing is a seaside course, the winds blew hard all day, and it made it hard for everyone. But I'm pleased also with how well we handled the adverse conditions."
Teams will tee off for the second round of the tournament on Monday, March 8 at 7:40 a.m.
Team results follow:
1) Kentucky 296
2) Georgia State 297
3) Baylor 298
4) Southern Miss 300
5) Vanderbilt 306
6) Georgia Southern 311
7) Old Dominion 313
