Baseball Ranked As High As No. 15 In Latest Polls
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss baseball team, coming off a 3-1 record last week, including a Conference USA weekend series win at then-No. 33 USF, along with a midweek win over then-No. 5 Ole Miss, is ranked No. 15 by Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and by Baseball America, No. 17 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 21 by Collegiate Baseball.
Southern Miss, (20-4, 4-2 Conference USA) downed the Rebels on Tuesday, 8-7, in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and claimed the victory with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Southern Miss dropped Friday's game at USF, 17-6, before coming back to win Saturday's contest, 3-2, scoring a run in the top of the ninth to break the tie, and won Sunday's rubber match, 9-3.
Tulane is ranked No. 11 by Baseball America, No. 16 by the Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll, No. 19 by the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball, marking the highest-ranked team in Conference USA. East Carolina is ranked No. 18 by Baseball America, No. 22 by Sports Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll, No. 23 by the NCBWA and No. 27 by Collegiate Baseball. USF and TCU are receiving votes in the Coaches Poll.
Southern Miss hosts Mississippi Valley State in a midweek game on Wednesday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles then host TCU for a three-game Conference USA weekend series on April 2-4. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game at 3 p.m., and Sunday's finale starts at 1 p.m.
