Cleland is currently in his senior season at Presbyterian Christian High School in Hattiesburg and is a five-year letterwinner for Coach Cory Bowles. He led the team in scoring average during his sophomore and junior seasons, shooting averages of 75.3 and 71.4, respectively. Cleland has won two area tournaments, taking first place with a 69 at the Natchez Country Club and posting a 66 at Brookhaven Country Club.
"Rocky is one of the top junior golfers in Hattiesburg and in the state," Johnson said. "He is very talented and has a good, hard work ethic. I feel that he will add a lot to our program and should continue to be one of the top players in the area."
The senior standout has enjoyed a successful career, never finishing worse than fourth in any high school match. In addition to his five letters in golf, he also earned one letter in soccer. Cleland was a high school teammate of current Southern Miss golfer, Austin Bowen.
Cleland is the second signee for the Southern Miss men's golf program for the 2005-06 school year. He joins Jason Cuthbertson, from Conway High School in Conway, Ark.
