Baseball Announces Fourth Signee Of Early Signing Period
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ?
Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Luke Adkins, a 5-9, 165-pound outfielder from Nettleton High School in Nettleton, Miss., to a national letter of intent and grant in aid for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the fourth signee of the early signing period."Luke is an excellent outfielder with outstanding speed and gives us a power hitter from the left side," Palmer said. "For his size, he hits with a lot of power, can hit for average and gives us a threat to steal on the bases. I look for him to make an immediate impact in our program."
As a junior last season, Adkins hit .578 with 15 doubles, three triples, eight home runs and drove in 51 runs. He scored 53 runs and stole 18-of-19 bases. He was a first-team all-state outfielder as a junior and a three-time all-district selection.
Adkins was a five-year letterwinner in baseball and a four-year letterwinner in basketball and football. He was a three-time all-division quarterback and punter.
The Golden Eagles other signees are Bailey Hartel (SS/5-10/170/So./Pearl River CC), Wayne Smith (LHP/Oak Grove HS) and Keith Winstead (C/6-3/195/So./Pearl River CC).
Southern Miss returns four position starters, two starting pitchers and 14 letterwinners from last year's squad that finished 45-19, tied for second place in league play, advanced to the conference tournament championship game and advanced to the NCAA regional tournament for the second-straight year. The Golden Eagles open their season against future Conference USA member Marshall, on Friday, Feb. 18, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 3 p.m.
