Baseball Announces 2005 Schedule
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Thirty home dates, including contests with Southeastern Conference foe Alabama, three games with Ole Miss (one home, one away, one neutral), two more neutral games in Jackson, Miss., hosting the Conference USA Tournament, along with playing seven teams that participated in NCAA Regional Tournaments last season, including Super Regional participants Tulane and East Carolina, along with an appearance in Lamar's Tournament and hosting the Southern Miss Tournament, highlight the 2005 Southern Miss baseball schedule.
"We're excited about our schedule for the 2005 season," said seventh-year Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer. "We always try to play the best competition that will not only challenge our club, but also prepare us for Conference USA competition. The conference continues to be one of the best in the nation, after sending four teams to the regionals last year."
"This year's schedule has seven opponents that were selected to participate in the NCAA Regional Tournament, and East Carolina and Tulane advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals. The conference schedule will be tough once again. We will travel to East Carolina, TCU, Houston, Louisville and Memphis and have home series with Tulane, Saint Louis, Cincinnati, USF and UAB."
The Golden Eagles open the 2005 season on Feb. 18-20 with a three-game home series with Marshall, who will join Conference USA In 2006, and a single home date with South Alabama. Southern Miss will host its own tournament, featuring Southwest Missouri State, McNeese State and Mercer. After hosting Southeastern Louisiana for a single game, the Golden Eagles travel to Beaumont, Texas, to participate in the Lamar Tournament. That tournament will feature UNC Wilmington and Indiana State.
The Golden Eagles play Ole Miss in Jackson on March 8, before hosting Arkansas State for a three-game series March 11-13, travel to Jackson for a contest with Louisiana-Monroe before beginning conference play at TCU March 18-20.
Non-conference contests at South Alabama (3/22), home dates against Mississippi Valley State (3/23), Alabama (3/29), Ole Miss (4/5) and New Orleans (4/12), a two-game series at Mississippi State (4/26-27), a third date in Jackson against Southeastern Louisiana (5/4) and a game at New Orleans (5/17) will be sprinkled around the conference schedule.
Other highlights on the Southern Miss' 2005 schedule will include contests with 2004 NCAA participants East Carolina, Lamar, Mississippi State, North Carolina - Wilmington, Ole Miss, TCU and Tulane. East Carolina and Tulane both advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.
