Baseball Announces Second Signee of Spring Period
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Brett Hoeflich, a 6-3, 215-pound first baseman/outfielder from Petal High School in Petal, Miss., to a national letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year.
"I am happy that Brett has decided to attend Southern Miss" Palmer said. "He is big, strong and an outstanding athlete who can provide us with power. We lose several players from this year's team who have provided us with power. If Brett continues to work hard, he has a chance to help us. Once again, it is good to sign another outstanding player from this area. These players have been an integral part of our program as we aim to win the Conference USA title and earn an NCAA Regional bid."
Hoeflich, who helped Petal to a 20-4 record as a senior this past season, finished third on the team, hitting .438 with five doubles, two triples, five home runs and 32 RBIs. He had a .568 on-base percentage and an .813 slugging percentage. He also was a member of three district championship teams from 2000-02.
Hoeflich was a team captain his senior year, was named to The Clarion Ledger's "Top Seniors To Watch" in District 4-5A and named to the state high school all-star game. He also was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students.
This marks the second signee of the spring signing period and fifth overall. The Golden Eagles signed Trey Cuevas (C/Oak Grove HS/Oak Grove, Miss.) last week, and Barry Bowden (RHP/Vidalia HS/Vidalia, La.), Patrick Ezell (P/Petal HS/Petal, Miss.) and Nathan Sanders (OF/Meridian CC/Meridian, Miss.) in the fall signing period.
Southern Miss is currently 30-10 overall and 14-4 in Conference USA action, good enough for first place in the standings. The Golden Eagles are ranked No. 21 in Baseball America, No. 22 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Poll, No. 22 in Collegiate Baseball and No. 27 in USA Today/Baseball Weekly Coaches Poll.
