Southern Miss Soccer Edges Blue Raiders, 2-1
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ? The Southern Miss soccer team won its second match in as many tries as it defeated Middle Tennessee State, 2-1, Friday in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Sophomore midfielder Lauren Prewitt scored the game winner off an assist by freshman Chelsey Brown in the 77th minute to give the Lady Eagles (2-2) the win. Southern Miss tallied its first goal on an own-goal by the Blue Raiders (1-3) in the 73rd minute.
"We had a sluggish first half, but we played very well in the final 20 minutes of the match," Southern Miss Head Coach Matt Clark said. "We just wore them down in the final minutes to the point where they conceded some goals."
Middle Tennessee State netted its goal in the 58th minute, as Danielle Laduke scored on a one-timer from 12 yards out.
Southern Miss out-shot the hosts, 18-11, aided by a 10-6 advantage in the first half.
Junior keeper Leslie Schoeplein won her second match of the season, finishing with five saves. Blue Raider keeper Emily Shrum finished with eight saves in the game.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, when it travels to face Alabama A&M. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
