Eagles Are 2nd At Cardinal Intercollegiate
Simpsonville, Ky. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team finished the first two rounds of the 2002 Cardinal Intercollegiate Tournament with a 570 team total, good for second place, behind South Alabama, at 568. The third and final round of the 54-hole event will be played Tuesday morning at The Cardinal Course in Simpsonville.
South Alabama's Ryan Gildersleeve shot rounds of 68-68--136, eight-under-par, to claim a one-stroke lead after two rounds. Wm. Ted Brown of VCU (68-69--137), and Coastal Carolina's Matthew Mills (68-69--137) are tied for second.
Matt Wofford led Southern Miss with rounds of 71-71--142, and is tied for 11th, six shots off the pace. Teammates Justin Emil (70-73--143), Michael Soroka (72-71--143), and Danny Dennis (69-74--143) all all tied for 16th place, while Justin Elliott (79-73--152), rounded out the five-player Golden Eagle squad. Teams play five, and count the top four scores each round.
Dennis' 69 matched the second-best score of the morning round. Six players carded four-under-par 68s, and Dennis was one of five players in at 69. Of the 10 rounds played by Coach Steve Johnson's team today, six were par or better and two others were one-over-par.
In two previous tournaments this fall, Southern Miss already owns a first-place finish in the Cellular One Raising Cane Classic played in Hattiesburg, Miss., and a fifth-place finish in the Carolina First Intercollegiate Tournament in Florence, S.C.
