Eagles Are Second in Carolina Tournament
FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team, playing in its second tournament of the fall season, recorded a 578, 36-hole team-total and is tied for second after first-day play in the 18th-annual Carolina First Intercollegiate Tournament being played at the Country Club of South Carolina. Old Dominion leads the tournament with a 575 team total and host Francis Marion is tied with Southern Miss.
East Carolina and North Carolina Wilmington, tied at 580, round out the top five teams heading into Tuesday's final round.
South Alabama's Ryan Gildersleeve tied the course record with an 8-under-par first round and is the leader after 36-holes at 8-under-par, 64-72--136. A total of 10 players bettered par on the 6,977-yard layout and nine others matched par.
Justin Elliott led the Golden Eagle squad with a 2-under-par, 73-69--143 total, and teammate Justin Emil is in the even par group at 72-72--144.
Other Golden Eagles players and their scores, include Michael Soroka, 73-73--146; Ben Snow, 73-73--146; and Shane Rushing, 74-75--149.
Teams play five players and count the top four each round. Southern Miss will play next in the Hillman Robbins Memorial at Big Creek Golf Club in Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
