Golf Team Hosting Cellular One Classic
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Southern Mississippi golf team will host the second annual Cellular One Raising Cane Classic, Sept. 6-10, at the Canebrake Golf Club. At least 17 teams are scheduled to compete in the 54-hole event.
The tournament starts with a college-am event Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. Contact Eagle Club Executive Director Dick Vogel at 601-266-5299 for more information on this event.
Teams will play practice rounds September 8, play 36 holes September 9 and a final 18 holes the following day. Teams will use 7:30 a.m., and 1 p.m., shotgun starts on the first day of play and then use tee times off No. 1 and No. 10, starting at 7:30 a.m., for the final round.
Teams scheduled to play in the tournament include, Arkansas State, Birmingham Southern, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Sam Houston State, South Florida, Stephen F. Austin, Troy State, Tulane, UNO, William Carey and host Southern Miss.
The Canebrake course was designed by PGA tour veteran Jerry Pate and recently was voted by Golf Digest as the No. 2 "best new affordable public course" in the United States. Canebrake recently hosted the Mississippi State Amateur Tournament.
Host Southern Miss put together team rounds of 280, 278 and 292 for a three-day total of 850 to win last year's event by a stroke over Jacksonville State. The Golden Eagles' Tim Yelverton also claimed medalist honors with a seven-under-par 206, three-day total, after shooting rounds of 68, 66 and 72 over the par 71 Canebrake layout.
The Golden Eagles' Michael Soroka finished second at three-under-par 67-71-72--210.
