Emil Shoots 73-80--153 At U.S. Amateur
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss golfer Justin Emil shot a 10-over-par 80 in today's second round of the U.S. Amateur Championship being played at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich., to finish the event with a 73-80--153 total, good for 226th place in the 312-player field.
Following today's second round of stroke play, the field was trimmed to the low 64 golfers, who will move on to match play over the next three days to determine the 2002 U.S. Amateur champion.
Bill Haas, the 20-year-old son of PGA Tour pro Jay Haas, shot a 2-under-par 68 today to earn medalist honors with a two-day total of 135. Five other players tied at 3-under-par 137.
Emil shot a 3-over-par 73 on the South Course at Oakland Hills, Monday, but could do no better than 80 on the North Course today. He carded two birdies, seven par,s seven bogeys and a double bogey in today's round.
Emil qualified for the U.S. Amateur by shooting a 12-under-par 132 two-round total in an early-August qualifying tournament in Grapevine, Texas. That total included a course-record 10-under-par 62 in his first round in the Texas event.
Emil, from Gulfport, Miss., will be a redshirt senior for Head Coach Steve Johnson and his Golden Eagle team this season.
