TCU Wins Conference Championship, Lady Eagles Finish 6th
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Lady Eagle golf team shot a season low round of 302 to finish tied for 6th place in the Conference USA Women's Golf Championship, that ended today at the Hattiesburg Country Club. TCU shot a final round 290 to win the league title.
Brena Quaranto had the best finish for Southern Miss shooting 73-74-78--225 for the tournament, and finishing tied for 12th place. Ofelia Lopez and Jennifer Keefe finished in a three-way tie for 17th place, shooting 74-77-77--228 and 77-77-74-228 respectively. Ashlea Deener shot 82-80-73--235 on the weekend, finishing tied for 31st, while Emily Black shot 86-79-82--247 finishing in 42nd place.
TCUs Brooke Tull took first place in the individual standings, shooting the best round of the weekend with a 69, helping her team to win first place. As a team, TCU shot 298-298-290--886, which is the lowest total ever in the C-USA tournament. The previous record was held by South Florida Bulls when they recorded a 902 at the 1998 conference championship. Tull went into the 14th hole of today's final round at six-under-par, but bogeyed three of the final five holes. Her three-day total of 215 also was a conference tournament best.
South Florida's Kelly Martin (71-75-70--216) finished one shot out of the lead and in second place, and Louisville's Cindy Pasechnik (72-71-74--217) was another stroke back in third. Tulane's Alexis Wooster (73-75-72--220) finished fourth and Carolin Landmann (73-74-74--221) of Tulane and Marika Pluta (77-72-72--221) of UAB rounded out the top five.
Second round leader Tulane matched its second score of 299 to finish at 889 but could not match TCUs 290 total. South Florida (290-308-300--898) finished in third, defending champion Memphis (295-301-313--909) was fourth and UAB (309-299-309--913) finished out the top five. Host Southern Miss its 302 total to move from a seventh place tie after two rounds into a tie for sixth with Louisville (304-306-305--915). East Carolina (306-307-309--922) and Cincinnati (325-313-314--952) finished eight and ninth, respectively.
D'Rae Ward of TCU, Brooke Mangan of UAB, Lindsay Hulwick of Tulane, Adrienne Millican of East Carolina and Alexis Wooster of Tulane where named to the All-Freshman Team. Wooster was named Freshman of the Year. Wooster, Jessica Krasny of East Carolina, Jennifer Jaszek of Memphis, Shannon Barr of TCU and Fany Schaeffer of South Florida where named to the All-Conference Second Team, while Kathy Schafer of Tulane, Cindy Pasechnik of Louisville, Meaghan Francella of Memphis, Carolin Landmann of Tulane and Tull all where named to the first team. Tull was named the C-USA Player of the Year.
Tulane's Sue Bower was named the Conference Coach of the Year.
