Eagles Are 9th in ASU Indian Classic
Jonesboro, Ark. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team finished the first two rounds of the 2002 Arkansas State Indian Classic here Monday with a 299-298--597 team total and stands in ninth place in the 13-team field, heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
South Alabama put together rounds of 288-285--573 to take the lead after 36 holes. Host Arkansas State is seven shots back at 290-290--580, South Florida (293-288--581) is third, Missouri (291-295--586) fourth and North Texas (291-297--599) rounds out the top five.
South Alabama's Gareth Maybin is alone in first place after rounds of 68-70--138, four under par for the day. Arkansas State's Jason Jackson is a stroke back at 70-69--139, USA's Ryan Gildersleeve (72-68--140) and USF's Jay Cavanaugh (75-65--140) are tied for third, and three other players are tied for fifth.
Southern Miss's best finish belonged to Jake Pasch who shot rounds of 76-70--146, eight shots off the lead. Matt Wofford finished 36 holes in a tie for 23rd at 74-74--148, Shane Rushing is tied for 39th at 72-80--152, Tim Yelverton is tied for 50th at 77-78--155 and Chris Speight is 62nd at 82-76--158.
Final round play is scheduled to start at 8 Tuesday morning with teams going off both No. 1 and No.10. Following this event, Southern Miss will end 2001-02 action April 23-25, in the Conference USA Tournament that will be played at the Hidden Creek Country Club in Navarre Beach, Fla.
