Southern Miss Golfers Finish Third At South Florida Tourney
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss saved its best round until the final day in the weather-shortened University of South Florida/Ron Smith Invitational in Tampa, Fla., and the Golden Eagles' 288 second-day total earned Head Coach Steve Johnson and his team a tie for third in the 18-team field.
Southern Miss finished at 294-288--582. Georgia Southern won the event with a 286-288--574 total, followed by Jacksonville State at 282-295--577.
Southern Miss was alone in third place after Friday's first round, with a 295 team score; and though the Eagles improved by six strokes in Sunday's final round, South Alabama recorded the best round of the tournament, a 285, to move from sixth into a third-place tie.
Saturday's second round was cancelled after gusty winds, plummeting temperatures and a steady rain forced the teams off the USF Course after the round had started. The event then was shortened to 36 holes.
Florida Southern's Steve Sokol took medalist honors at four-under-par 71-67--138. Southern Miss' top finisher was Tim Yelverton, who carded rounds of 73-70--143. Other Southern Miss players and their scores, include: Shane Rushing tied for 17th at 75-72--147, Jake Pasch tied for 20th at 75-73--148, Justin Emil tied for 38th at 71-80--151 and Chris Speight tied for 42nd at 79-73--152.
In two spring tournaments thus far, the Golden Eagles have recorded a first and a third. They will play next in the Coastal Carolina Invitational Mar. 3-5 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
