Southern Miss Inks Final Baseball Signee Of Early Period
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Mark Broom, a 5-11, 215-pound right-handed pitcher from Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss., to a letter of intent for the 2003-04 academic year. This marks the fourth signee of the early signing period.
"I am excited that Mark has decided to attend Southern Miss," Palmer said. "He has excellent control and throws three pitches for strikes. He should be able to come in and give us help right away and should compete for a spot in the weekend rotation."
Broom was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Perry Coggin at West Marion High School. He was a three-time all-district selection, a two-time district most valuable player and selected an All-American. He was invited to the state games and the Crossroads All-Star Game. He also was named the team's best defensive player.
Broom also lettered in football and was a two-time all-district selection and two-time best defensive back selection. He was selected to the national honor society and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class.
