Local Standout Signs With Golden Eagles
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Patrick Ezell, a 6-3, 175-pound, right-handed pitcher, from Petal High School in Petal, Miss., to a national letter of intent for the 2002-03 academic year. This marks the first signing of the early period for the Golden Eagles.
"Patrick is a good pitcher with a bright future ahead of him," Palmer said. "He can throw four pitches for strikes (fastball, curve, slider, changeup) which should give him a chance to be an important player for our program as a freshman. He has good presence on the mound and has a lot of confidence when he pitches. He can throw his fastball between 89-90 mph and uses that pitch as his out pitch."
Ezell has posted a 16-9 record with a 2.88 ERA in 131 innings pitched over his three-year career. He has struck out 156 and walked only 34. Last season, he finished with 79 strikeouts, walked only 13 batters and posted a 2.16 ERA in 55 innings of work.
He earned all-district honors and his team's outstanding pitcher award last season and was named one of the top 100 players in the Team One National Showcase. He finished with a 5-0 record with the Mississippi Stars summer team. Ezell has posted a 3.7 GPA during his high school career.
