Southern Miss Soccer Falls to East Carolina
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? East Carolina's Kelly Gray scored a game-winning goal on a free kick in the 86th minute of play, sealing the Lady Pirates 2-1 Conference USA victory over Southern Miss, Sunday, at the USM Track and Soccer Complex.
The loss was the Lady Eagles fourth straight, as the team fell to 5-4 overall and 0-4 in C-USA.
Gray's goal came after each Southern Miss was called for a foul, deep in East Carolina (5-4, 3-1) territory.
In the match, Southern Miss out-shot the Lady Pirates, 16-14.
The Lady Eagles opened the scoring as freshman midfielder Lauren Prewitt found the back of the net off senior forward Claire Rea's assist in the 34th minute of play. The goal was Prewitt's fourth of the season.
However, the Lady Pirates answered in 39th minute, as Amanda Duffy netted a goal off a Jennifer Leonard assist to knot the score, 1-1.
Sophomore keeper Leslie Schoeplein took the loss. Schoeplein had six saves in goal.
The Lady Eagles return to action, Wednesday, in a non-conference match against Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.
