Southern Miss Soccer Drops Conference USA Opener to Cincinnati
CINCINNATI, Ohio ? After beginning the season with a school-record five consecutive wins, Southern Miss dropped its first match of the season, 3-0, to Cincinnati in the Conference USA opener for both teams.
The Lady Eagles (5-1, 0-1 in C-USA) had just six shots on the night, while the Bearcats (4-2, 1-0) fired 19 shots. Ann Thomas paced the Cincinnati attack, scoring two of the team's three goals.
In the first half, the Bearcats jumped out to the 2-0 lead. Thomas netted both goals for Cincinnati -- the first off an assist by Lisa Stephens in the 9th minute, and the second in the 32nd minute off an assist by Stacey Kyser.
Cincinnati kept up the pressure in the second half. Heather Herweh found the back of the net in the 66th minute for the final score of the game. The goal came off Tasha Wagner's corner kick.
Junior midfielder Katie Adams led Southern Miss with three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Leslie Schoeplein finished with a season-high six saves.
The three goals given up by the Lady Eagles' defense was the most that the team has given up on the season. Prior to the match, Southern Miss had allowed just one goal.
The Lady Eagles return to action, Sunday, at Louisville. The match is set for 1 p.m.
