Lady Eagles Soccer Opens C-USA Play on the Road
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Off to its best start in school history, the Southern Miss women's soccer team begins Conference USA play this weekend with a pair of matches on the road.
The Lady Eagles (5-0) visit Cincinnati Friday at 7 p.m., and meet Louisville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Led by junior forward Tricia Wiles, Southern Miss has outscored its opponents, 13-1, this season. Wiles leads the team with three goals and one assist, and junior Lindsay Canham (2 goals, 2 assists) and freshman Lauren Prewitt (3 goals) follow with six points apiece.
The Lady Eagles defense has been stout in the first five matches, not allowing a goal in 444 minutes of play. South Alabama scored the first goal of the season on Southern Miss in the 84th minute of the Monday's 2-1 Lady Eagle win.
Southern Miss is 0-2-1 against the Lady Bearcats, and the team is 3-0 against the Lady Cardinals.
Cincinnati, coming off a 0-1 loss to Miami (Ohio), is 3-2 over its first five matches of the year. The team is led by senior midfielder Nickie Luse, who has two goals on the season. The Lady Bearcats have also gotten scoring from junior defender Heather Herweh and sophomore midfielder Amy Mink. Over its five games, Cincinnati has outscored opponents, 4-2.
After opening the season with a win over IUPUI, Louisville (1-3) has since run into trouble. The team has been outscored by opponents, 13-4. Junior midfielder Melissa Wark leads the Lady Cardinals with two goals on the season, while freshman defender Leigh Carroll and senior defender Kristin Tapp.
