Southern Miss Tops South Alabama, Remains Undefeated
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss women's soccer team kept its unblemished record intact with a 2-1 victory over visiting South Alabama, Monday, at the Southern Miss Track and Soccer Complex.
Lindsay Canham netted the Lady Eagles' first goal of the game, converting on assists by Claire Rea and Tricia Wiles in the 30th minute of the match.
"I thought we played very well," Southern Miss Head Coach Matt Clark said. "For us to beat this team (South Alabama), we had to step up our level of play. They are a very good program, and they have been places that we want to go."
The two teams picked up the intensity in the second half, but the defensive play strengthened as well. The score remained until the early part of the 84th minute as Wiles scored a goal of her own off Katie Adams' assist.
However, the Lady Jaguars answered later in the 84th minute following Camille Andrews' goal off an assist by Cindy Rainville.
Southern Miss limited the Lady Jaguars to just nine shots, while firing 15 of its own. The goal was the first that the Lady Eagles had given up on the season.
Leslie Schoeplein picked up her fourth win in goal, finishing with five saves. Kyla Rogers took the loss for South Alabama (1-3-1). Rogers finished with eight saves.
Southern Miss returns to action on the road against Cincinnati, Friday, before visiting Louisville on Sunday.
