Lady Eagles drop McNeese State, 4-0
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Anchored by a three-goal first half, the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Soccer team cruised to the 4-0 win over McNeese State Wednesday at Tatum Park.
The Lady Eagles reeled off three scores in the first 27 minutes of play, with Claire Rea, Lauren Prewitt and Katie Adams each netting goals.
Rea put Southern Miss on the board as she headed in Katie Randolph's cross for the first goal of the game in the 9th minute. Prewitt followed with a successful penalty shot in the 19th minute, while Adams completed the scoring in the half off Randolph's second assist of the game.
In the second half, Leila McReynolds converted on Avery Berrey's assist to round out the scoring.
"We played a very good first half because we locked down the ball in our possession," Southern Miss Head Coach Matt Clark said. "We didn't play well in the second half, and I think we got too confident. But we had some players step up today, and we were successful."
The Lady Eagles out-gunned the Cowgirls, 26-4, in the game, and had the shots on goal advantage, 10-2.
Leslie Schoeplein and the Southern Miss defense did not give up a goal in its fourth straight game, as Schoeplein picked up her fourth shutout of the season. Defender Kay Beth Costilow left the game in the second half with a contusion on her shin.
The win gives the Lady Eagles their fourth win in a row, the best start in the history of the program. Southern Miss returns to action Saturday as it travels to Thibodaux, La., to face Nicholls State.
