Eagles Third In Conference USA Tournament
NAVARRE, Fla. - Southern Miss shot a 302 team total and moved up one spot in final- round action at the 2001 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship today, finishing in a third-place tie with Louisville, behind Houston and UAB, with a 54-hole total of 899.
Houston shot its second 290 round of the tournament to finish at 290-292-290--872 and claim its fifth straight league title. Houston freshman Brad McIntosh shot the best round of the final day, a three-under-par 69, to finish at 72-73-69--214 and claim medalist honors. He was the only player to break par in the final round, and he and Louisville's Chris Campbell (69-74-72--215) were the only two players to finish under par for the tournament.
As a result, he was named to the All-Tournament team, the All-Conference team and earned the Freshman of the Year Award as well. Southern Miss' Tim Yelverton led the Golden Eagles with a 73-75-72--220 total and was named to the All-Conference team as well.
The complete All-Conference team consisted of Graeme McDowell, Payton Osborn and Daniel Ozley of UAB, McIntosh, Wade Ormsby and Andy Sanders of Houston, along with Yelverton, Louisville's Chris Campbell, South Florida's Brett Hitchcock and Charlotte's Michael Shamp.
The All-Tournament team, in addition to McIntosh, consists of Tele Wightman of South Florida, Charlotte's Shamp, Houston's Simon Robinson and Louisville's Chris Campbell. UAB's Alan Kaufman was named Coach of the Year, and UAB's McDowell earned Player of the Year honors.
South Florida (298-295-309--902) finished fifth, followed by Memphis (307-300-303--910), Marquette (306-307-303--916), Cincinnati (296-311-315--922), DePaul (309-302-312--923), Charlotte (297-311-317--925), Tulane (307-317-305--929) and Saint Louis (313-305-318--036).
