Southern Miss Improves to Sixth At Ron Smith-USF Invitational
TAMPA, Fla. -- Jedd McCluen and Bruce McDonald are one-two on the leader board after 36 holes in the Ron Smith-USF Invitational at
the University of South Florida Golf Course, and the duo has pushed their College of Charleston team lead to nine strokes, heading into
Sunday's final round.
Virginia Commonwealth remains in second place at 281-299–580, with Austin Peay (294-295–589), Arkansas State (301-290–591) and
Georgia Southern (297-296–593) round out the top five teams.
In ninth place after Friday’s first round with a 300 score, Southern Miss cut five strokes off that first-day total and moved up three spots
into sixth place after two rounds with a 595 total.
Tim Yelverton, who was tied for third after one round with a two-under-par 69, dropped one spot into a fourth place tie after shooting a 74
Saturday for a team-best 143 total after 36-holes. Justin Emil had the Golden Eagles best round of the day with a two-over-par 73 and is
at 150 after two rounds. He is tied for 30th place.
Teammates Jake Pasch and Matt Wofford both had 74's after opening round 77's, are tied at 151 and tied for 37th place in the overall
field. Ben Snow had a 76 Saturday and is at 153 heading into final round play, good for a tie for 48th place.
McCluen and McDonald are two of just three golfers among 90, who are under par after 36 holes. McCluen shot a one-under 70 today to
move from third to first at three-under 139. McDonald held his second place spot with a 72 today and a 140 total. Meanwhile, VCU's Ryan
Zylstra, who led after 18 holes with a 67, shot a 10-over 81 today to drop all the way to 17th place.
Zylstra reversed fortunes from his first round, when he was five-under after just eight holes. Today, he was five over through his first seven
holes, and never recovered.
Arkansas State was a team on the move in the second round, shooting a 290, after a first round 301. That moved ASU from 11th place to
fourth. The Indians were led by Wixson Huffstetler and Matt Young, who each shot even-par 71.
