College of Charleston Wins USF Tourney; Southern Miss Eighth
TAMPA, Fla. - College of Charleston led from start to finish in the 2001 Ron Smith-USF
Invitational at the University of South Florida Golf Course in Tampa, and took the team title with a 54-hole seven over par 859, 22
strokes better than second place Virginia Commonwealth. Southern Miss finished eighth.
Southern Miss finished first round play with a 300 team total and in ninth place. The Golden Eagles improved to 295 Saturday and
moved into sixth place. However, Coach Steve Johnson’s team posted its worst round of the three-day event Sunday at 306,
finishing in eighth place at 901, just a shot out of seventh.
For Southern Miss, Tim Yelverton shot a six-over par 77 in the final round for a 220 total and a tie for 11th place in the individual
race. Justin Emil (74) and Matt Wofford (74) finished at 224 and 227 and in ties for 25th and 35th place, respectively, while
Jake Pasch (80) and Ben Snow (79) rounded out the Southern Miss players at 231 and 232. They finished in ties for 53rd and
56th place, respectively.
Charleston entered Sunday's final round with teammates Jedd McCluen and Bruce
McDonald battling for medalist honors. McCluen held a one-stroke lead after 36 holes, but McDonald fired an even par 71,
compared to a 78 for McCluen. Including the first for McDonald and a fourth place for McCluen, Charleston placed four golfers
among the top 10 finishers.
Following College of Charleston and VCU, Georgia Southern (889), Columbus State (892) and Arkansas State (893) round out the
top five teams.
The Golden Eagle golfers compete next in the LSU Spring Invitational, Mar. 4-6. Southern Miss tournament team and individual
scores follow:
