Golden Eagles Sign Outstanding Golfer
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Head Coach Steve Johnson has added his first men's golf signee of the fall signing period. The new Golden Eagle is Daniel Dennis of Collierville, Tenn. The 5-7, 140-pound senior plays at Rossville Academy in Rossville, Tenn., where he has posted an outstanding athletic and academic record.
Dennis is ranked No. 85 on Golfweek Magazine's Top 100 players. He also has earned MVP honors on his high school team for the past four years and won athlete of the week honors from the Memphis Commercial-Appeal in Memphis after winning the Class A State School Golf Tournament with a 69.
Last season, Dennis won or tied for first in five straight one-day high school tournaments during the 2000 season. He has recorded 35, top-15 finishes in various tournaments, including a pair of victories and 18, top-five finishes. His tournament scoring average stands at 74.15.
Dennis also is an outstanding student. As a junior, he received his school's achievement award in chemistry and algebra II, and finished second in his school's science fair for the 1999-2000 year and qualified for the District Science Fair the same year.
Johnson says Dennis has the ability to contribute immediately. "Daniel has all the skills you look for at this level," the head coach said. "Given the quality of the schedule we play in both the fall and spring and Daniel's work ethic, he can be a quality player for us, and he can do so quickly."
