Southern Miss Inks First Baseball Recruit of Early Signing Period
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Oak Grove High School standout Marc Maddox, a 5-10, 170-pound outfielder/infielder, to a national letter of intent for the 2002-2003 academic year. This is the first signing of the early signing period for the Golden Eagle baseball program.
"Marc's work habits are outstanding," Palmer said. "He is a good hitter and has shown improvment each year, so I believe he is going to improve even more and help us. I believe he will be a good fit for our program."
As a junior last season, Maddox hit .515 with eight home runs, 46 runs batted in, 10 doubles, 18 stolen bases and scored 55 runs. He led Oak Grove in batting average, home runs, runs batted in, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
Maddox helped lead Oak Grove to a second-place finish in the South State Finals en route to being named All-District 7-4A and All-Area Academic by The Times of Lamar County.
Southern Miss finished the 2001 season with a 27-32 record but advanced to the semifinals of the FedEx Conference USA Baseball Tournament. The Golden Eagles return four position starters and three starting pitchers and add 11 newcomers to this year's roster. USM opens its 2002 season with a three-game series against Lipscomb University on February 15-17, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
