Eagle Golfers Finish Seventh at Memphis Tournament
MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- The Southern Miss men's golf team saved its best round of the tournament for today's final round to move up one spot and capture seventh place in the Hillman Robbins Memorial Intercollegiate at the Big Creek Golf Club on Tuesday.
Head Coach Steve Johnson's team rode Tim Yelverton's four-under-par 68 to a 290 total and an 886 three-round total after shooting 300 and 296 in Monday's opening two rounds. Today's 290 total was second only to Tulane's 288 and Jacksonville State's 289.
Arkansas State managed only a 293 final-round total but held on to first place with an 870 total, two shots better than Jacksonville State. Austin Peay (878), Florida Southern (879) and Middle Tennessee State (882) round out the top five.
UNC Wilmington's Derek Brown carded a one-under-par 71 Tuesday to finish two shots in front of Yelverton, who used his best round of the tournament and the best round of the day to move from 11th place all the way to number two. He finished the tournament at four-under-par 212.
Other Golden Eagles and their scores include Shane Rushing (74-75-73 -- 222), tied for 25th; Justin Emil (74-75-76 -- 225) tied for 33rd; Michael Soroka (81-73-73 -- 227) tied for 38th; and, Bo Lee (82-75-83 -- 240) tied for 67th.
Following the Memphis event, the Golden Eagles will play in the Oct. Oct. 14-16, Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas, hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
