Dalonte Hill became a part of the men’s basketball program at Southern Miss under the leadership of Head Coach Jay Ladner in 2019. He serves as an Assistant Coach for the Golden Eagles.
Hill came to Southern Miss after spending two seasons at Austin Peay under Matt Figger, in which the Governors won 41 games. The Governors were 41-25 overall and 25-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference in Hill’s time there. He had worked previously with Figger when he was on staff at Kansas State.
Prior to his time in Tennessee, he coached three years at Maryland (2011-13) helping the Terrapins rebuild with back-to-back top-25 signing classes in 2012 and 2013. He had luck in pulling in local standouts such as Melo Trimble to help Mark Turgeon bring the Terrapins back to prominence.
Hill spent six years at Kansas State (2006-11) where he recruited future NBA player Michael Beasley. Hill served on staff at Kansas State for Bob Huggins and Frank Martin, aiding Martin as he built the Wildcats from a lightly-regarded squad to a Big 12 power; after Huggins left following Hill’s first season, Martin promoted him to associate head coach. During Hill’s time on campus, Kansas State won 20 games in four of five seasons. Hill helped land a pair of national top-10 recruits in Michael Beasley and Bill Walker in 2006, earning the nation’s top-rated signing class by Scout.com and Rivals.com. During his time at Kansas State, Hill brought four McDonald’s All-Americans to Manhattan.
Over the course of his career, Hill has had the privilege of coaching several other NBA players, such as Jake Layman and Alex Len (Maryland) and Rodney McGruder (Kansas State), in addition to the aforementioned Beasley.
He joined the collegiate coaching ranks in 2003 at his alma mater Charlotte after two seasons as head coach for highly-regarded AAU program DC Assault. Under Bobby Lutz, Hill helped guide Charlotte to a 61-30 mark and three consecutive postseason appearances, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips (2004-05). Hill coached two All-Americans and a Conference USA Player of the Year during his time in Charlotte.
As a player, Hill helped Charlotte to three postseason appearances—the 49ers advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 during Hill’s freshman season. He played his senior season at Bowie State before returning to Charlotte to complete his bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2001.
The Washington, D.C. native has three daughters: Danae, Dakotah and Daeja.
