Southern Miss Heads to Arkansas State for First Sun Belt Road Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss soccer (3-3-2, 0-1 SBC) heads back on the road Thursday for its first Sun Belt Conference match away from Hattiesburg, facing Arkansas State (2-3-2, 0-1 SBC) at A-State Soccer Complex in Jonesboro, Ark. First kick is set for 4 p.m. CT.

The Golden Eagles enter their second conference match after opening Sun Belt play against James Madison last Friday. Prior to the conference opener, Southern Miss put together a four-match unbeaten stretch that included wins over Southern and Nicholls. Southern Miss enters Thursday averaging 13.6 shots per match and has outshot its opponents 109-99 through eight contests.
Southern Miss has scored 17 goals this season with production coming from throughout the lineup. Ava Bynes continues to lead the Golden Eagles with four goals and nine points, while Ryan Smith has two goals and two assists. Olivia Tribolet has added two goals and an assist, with Oliwia Loeman and Shaelynn Quick also sitting on two goals apiece. Nine different Golden Eagles have found the back of the net, while Southern Miss has generated 39 corner kicks through its opening eight matches.
Thursday also gives Southern Miss another opportunity to continue a strong history in Jonesboro. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series with Arkansas State 5-1-3 and have never lost on the Red Wolves' home field, posting a 1-0-3 record in four trips. Each of the last two meetings in Jonesboro finished 2-2, including the programs' most recent matchup at A-State Soccer Complex in 2024. Arkansas State earned its first win in the series last season with a 5-1 result in Hattiesburg.
Arkansas State enters Thursday following a 3-0 setback at Georgia Southern in its Sun Belt opener on Sept. 13. The Red Wolves have scored eight goals through seven matches while averaging 13.1 shots per contest and have been active on set pieces with 36 corner kicks. A-State is 1-1-2 at home this season, with its lone home victory coming against Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 27.
Elleigh Newcomb leads Arkansas State with three goals, while Kennedy Horn has produced two goals and an assist. Lucia Flores has also scored twice, and Maddy Tapley accounts for the Red Wolves' other goal. Horn scored the winner in A-State's 1-0 road victory over Southern Indiana earlier this month, the Red Wolves' first shutout of the season.
With both sides entering at 0-1 in Sun Belt play, Thursday begins a stretch of league matches for Southern Miss that continues Sunday when the Golden Eagles return home.
