Men’s Golf Place Third at the Sun Belt Conference Championship

MADISON, Miss. — Men's golf wrapped up the Sun Belt Conference Championship in third place, after advancing to match play in the morning and falling to No. 45 Arkansas State 3.5-1.5 at the Annandale Golf Club.
Concluding the end of round three, with Jake Moffitt finishing his back nine at 5-over 77, the Golden Eagles advanced to match play in third to face the second seed, No. 45 Arkansas State.
Supakorn Amornchaichan recorded a commanding win over Cole Kirby with a 4&3 win. The junior got off to an early lead with three birdies over a seven-hole stretch. Entering the back nine, Amornchaichan held a steady three-up lead with two more birdies to conclude the matchup, clinching on the 15th hole.
The freshman Moffitt picked up a half-point in a tie against Jack Wallis, guided by two eagles on the front nine. Wallis battled back with a string of birdies and an eagle to tie the match heading to the back nine, where the two traded identical scores through five holes. Wallis jumped ahead with a birdie, but Moffitt fought back with four straight pars to send the pair to a 19th hole. Both recorded birdies to end the contest square.
Arkansas State secured the win with two 3&2 victories over Walker Wise and Benjamin Fernandez. Wise carded six pars and a birdie on the front nine, but Milan Reed took the lead on the 12th hole and closed the match with two late birdies. Fernandez held a 1-up lead through the front nine before Jack Lile went ahead with a clean back seven, winning with an eagle to go 3-up with two holes left.
Matthew Javier battled against Thomas Schmidt but fell behind to drop the match 5&4. The sophomore racked up eight pars and an eagle but Schmidt pulled ahead, matching Javier with his own eagle and three birdies to close the match and giving No. 45 Arkansas State the win 3.5-1.5
Southern Miss finished in third place after a win and a tie pushed the Black and Gold ahead of South Alabama, which settled for fourth place.
