BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern Miss men's tennis (5-5) fell to No. 6 LSU (17-2), 6-1, on Sunday evening at the LSU Tennis Complex, as Saheb Sodhi recorded the Golden Eagles' lone point with a three-set victory.
LSU secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Matias Ponce De Leon and Enzo Kohlmann defeated Sodhi and Eric Perkowski, 6-3, before Alessio Vasquez and Calin Stirbu followed with a 6-2 win over Jose Murariu and Matei Varbanciu on court three. The No. 1 doubles match between Kale Mize and Jay Temming and LSU's No. 66 tandem of Andrej Loncarevic and Sasa Markovic was left unfinished at 5-4.
The Tigers added to their lead early in singles play, beginning with a 6-2, 6-2 win by No. 54 Erik Arutiunian over Mize on court one. Enzo Kohlmann then claimed a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Olle Noltorp at No. 4, and Vasquez earned a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Murariu on court two to push LSU in front.
Southern Miss answered on court three, where Sodhi delivered the team's point with a hard-fought win over Ponce De Leon. Sodhi took the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-3), dropped the second set 6-3 and responded with a 6-3 third set win to close out the match.
LSU finished off the team victory with wins on courts five and six. Rudy Ceccon defeated Perkowski, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, while Stirbu outlasted Varbanciu, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 1-0 (10-4), at No. 6.
The match was Southern Miss' only scheduled stop in Baton Rouge after the originally scheduled match against Southern was canceled, and it came against an LSU squad that entered the weekend ranked No. 6 nationally and fresh off a 4-3 win at No. 2 Texas on Friday.
Southern Miss returns home on Friday, March 13, to host Omaha in Hattiesburg for Senior Day before heading to San Antonio next week for matches against UIW on March 16 and UTSA on March 17.
