SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southern Miss men's tennis (7-7) picked up a 4-2 road win over UIW (8-2) to open its San Antonio swing on Monday before falling to UTSA (3-10), 4-0, on Tuesday and Texas A&M Corpus Christi (12-2), 4-1, on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles opened the trip with their best result of the week, rallying from an early deficit to beat Incarnate Word after dropping the doubles point. UIW claimed courts two and three in doubles to move in front 1-0, but Southern Miss answered with four singles wins to take control of the match.
Saheb Sodhi helped spark the comeback at No. 2 singles, earning a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Emilio Vila. Eric Perkowski followed with a three set victory at No. 3, defeating Marcel Miralles 7-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Olle Noltorp added a straight set win at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Augustin Salazar. Jay Temming then sealed the team victory at No. 6 singles with a 7-6, 6-3 result against Ian Uraga.
Southern Miss could not carry that momentum into Tuesday's matchup with UTSA. The Roadrunners swept all three doubles courts to grab the opening point, then picked up straight set wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to close out the 4-0 decision. Even with the final score, the Golden Eagles were still fighting on two top courts, where Jose Murariu and Sodhi each had matches left unfinished.
The trip wrapped up Wednesday against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, where the Golden Eagles once again battled after doubles play. The Islanders took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, though Southern Miss did get a 7-5 victory from Noltorp and Matei Varbanciu at No. 3 doubles.
Sodhi provided Southern Miss' lone completed singles point in the finale, beating Omar Suarez 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. Texas A&M Corpus Christi answered with wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 to secure the team result, while matches at No. 4 and No. 6 were left unfinished.
Across the three match stretch, Sodhi turned in one of the strongest weeks for Southern Miss. He won singles matches against both UIW and Texas A&M Corpus Christi and helped lead the Golden Eagles to their lone team win of the trip. Noltorp also contributed a singles win against UIW and paired with Varbanciu for the doubles victory against the Islanders.
Southern Miss returns to Sun Belt play on Sunday, March 22, when the Golden Eagles travel to Mobile to face South Alabama.
