DORADO, Puerto Rico. – Southern Miss men's golf concludes the Dorado Beach Collegiate on the podium with a second-place finish carding seven-under 857 behind Stetson and in front of the host University of North Carolina Greensboro at TPC Dorado Beach on Tuesday.
"Another great week by our program to finish second in Puerto Rico," said Brescher. "The golf course was a great test this week. There were some difficult spots, but also some spots where you could make some birdies and move up the board. I'm very proud of our guys and how they grind hard all the way to the finish. The way they finish today is going to pay dividends come the month of May."
Third place finisher, Benjamin Fernandez leaves his mark on the event with a four-under 68, tying Matthew Javier's round two performance, to cement the Golden Eagles in second place. Fernandez picked up an eagle on the 11th hole, a par 5 spanning 530 yards, and five birdies, four of which come from the front nine. Supakorn Amornchaichan went one-under 71, to jump six spots individually and to secure the Golden Eagles second best finish adding to the total.
The Ben Hogan award winner, Jake Moffitt, stayed even through round three to finish the event tied-for fifth and just one stroke behind teammate Fernandez. After a string of bogeys in the front nine going two-over, the freshman picked up two birdies and seven pars to leave a clean sheet with an even-par 72. Javier jotted a one-over 73 with 15 pars on the day. The Ontario native finished the event tied-for seventh.
Southern Miss led the 15 team field in birdies with 56, two ahead of George Mason in second. Moffitt led the event tied for first on par 4s, with an average of 3.93 and a two-under, he also finished in a tie for third on par 3s going one-under with an average on 2.92. Fernandez led the field on par 5s going seven-under with an average of 4.42 as well as being tied-for first in birdies with 16.
The first time the Golden Eagles finished second in back-to-back events was in 2007, where Southern Miss finished in second at the Adams Cup of Newport and the Memphis Intercollegiate.
Southern Miss is back in action at the Seminole Intercollegiate on March 15 lasting until March 17 at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
