Southern Miss' Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State (19-11, 10-7 Sun Belt) held off Southern Miss (15-15, 8-9 Sun Belt) on Tuesday night in Jonesboro, winning 89-84 in a slugfest. The Red Wolves benefited from 25 more free-throw attempts than the Golden Eagles, as Arkansas State scored 61 points off free throws and second-chance possessions.
Tylik Weeks finished with a game-high 21 points, which moved him to four-straight contests with at least 20 points. The Golden Eagles got another 20 points from Isaac Taveras and 16 from Djahi Binet – all three fouled out along with Dylan Brumfield and Izzy Hart.

How it Happened
Arkansas State answered a quick Southern Miss start with a 10-2 run that put Southern Miss behind two at the first media timeout. Djahi Binet had six of the first 10 points for the Golden Eagles, while Tylik Weeks made his sixth three-pointer of the season on an early offensive possession.
Binet added four more points to reach 10 of the first 14 for the Golden Eagles. Izzy Hart and Tylik Weeks combined for a quick four points that cut the game back to a one-point deficit with just over 10 minutes left in the half. Despite the Golden Eagles picking up a sizable foul count compared to the Red Wolves, Southern Miss managed to get back within one after Curt Lewis hit a corner three, which was followed by a Dylan Brumfield layup.
Southern Miss had a successful challenge with 7:05 left in the first half, which was followed by Weeks' eighth and ninth points of the night. That cut Arkansas State's lead to 28-27, but the lead mounted back up as the fouls reached 13-4 and had Arkansas State living at the free-throw line. A corner three from Izzy Hart sparked the Golden Eagles as they were on a stretch of 5-for-7 shooting, but Arkansas State made it back to the free-throw line for the 24th and 25th time. That pushed the score to 46-39 with 2:16 to play.
A late three-pointer from Arkansas State gave the home team a 5-0 run to end the first half, which put the Red Wolves up 53-44 at the half. Arkansas State went 24-for-27 from the free-throw line in the first 20 minutes, while Southern Miss went 7-for-10 after having 10 more fouls committed than the Red Wolves. Despite being down at the break, the Golden Eagles shot 45.9 percent in the opening frame and made a trio of three-pointers.
Southern Miss came out strong in the second half with an Isaac Taveras dunk and a Tegra Izay layup that forced Arkansas State to call a timeout, quickly cutting the deficit to a five-point game. Taveras then cut it to three with a nifty spin move, but the Red Wolves stretched it back to six with a three-pointer out of an out-of-bounds play.
Weeks had a chance to make it a two-point game but missed both free throws, which allowed Arkansas State to push the game to 61-54. Weeks got it back to a five-point deficit with a big slam, though Arkansas State answered again with free throws. Southern Miss answered right back with an 8-2 run that tied the game twice, with the last making it 71-71 as the clock was sitting at 7:38. Binet gave the Golden Eagles the lead for the first time since the 17:16 mark in the first half.
Southern Miss went on to lead by as many as five points, going ahead 83-78 with under three minutes to play. However, Arkansas State went on to finish the game on an 11-1 run over the final two-and-a-half minutes as Southern Miss failed to score a field goal down the stretch. The Golden Eagles went the final 3:07 without a field goal and finished the game 2-for-10.
