Southern Miss Upends South Alabama Behind Hot Shooting

MOBILE, Ala. – Southern Miss (16-15, 9-9 Sun Belt) picked up its first win in Mobile since 2015 after cruising to a 68-55 win over South Alabama (21-10, 11-7 Sun Belt) on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles got a massive night from Chiante' Tramble as he scored a career-high 18 points on 5-for-8 shooting from deep. Both Isaac Taveras and Djahi Binet grabbed 10-plus rebounds, while Binet scored 13 points to record his 10th double-double of the season.
The win puts Southern Miss in a tie for eighth with James Madison, though the Golden Eagles own the tiebreaker with their win over the Dukes. The Sun Belt Conference will release the bracket in the coming days for the league tournament next week.

How it Happened
Izzy Hart got the scoring started for Southern Miss as the senior guard drilled a three-pointer on the first possession of the game for either team. The Golden Eagles went on to miss their next five shots as South Alabama scored the next five points to take their first lead of the game.
The Jaguars continued to press as they built their lead to seven after Randy Brady it the second of back-to-back three-pointers for the home team. Southern Miss held South Alabama without a field goal for nearly seven minutes, letting the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 20-19 with nine minutes left in the half. Tylik Weeks gave Southern Miss its first lead since the start of the game after converting a pair of throws, making it 21-20.
Southern Miss followed with a 17-2 run to go ahead 31-22 with four minutes to go in the half. Weeks reached double figures in that stretch as he also made a rare Bully three-pointer. He forced a Jaguar timeout on a transition layup, but they came out of the timeout with some answers. A three-pointer and layup from the Jaguars cut it to a four-point game with three minutes left, but Isaac Taveras and Weeks score to steady the ship.
South Alabama got the last basket of the half as Southern Miss limited the home team to a 33.3 percent shooting clip. The Golden Eagles went 11-for-27 in the first half for a 40.7 percent clip. Southern Miss only turned the ball over six times in the first 20 minutes and had 22 rebounds.
Southern Miss scored the first five points of the half to leap to an 11-point lead in less than 90 seconds. The score fluctuated between seven and nine for Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles were up 43-34 heading into the first media timeout. With the score 45-38, both teams were on scoring droughts of two-plus minutes.
Weeks broke that drought out of the under-12 media timeout with two freebies from the charity stripe – that put the Golden Eagles up nine with 11:08 to play. Chiante' Tramble followed that with back-to-back three-pointers that gave Southern Miss a 15-point lead and a 10-0 run that forced a South Alabama timeout. South Alabama, though, answered with a 6-0 run that got it back to a nine-point game with 8:06 left on the clock.
South Alabama cut it to single digits one final time before Southern Miss went on a 9-0 run thanks to Curt Lewis and Tramble. Tramble hit a pair of triples in that stretch to put the Golden Eagles ahead by 17 – he finished with 18 points and five three-pointers. Tramble later converted an and-one to give Southern Miss its largest lead of the night at 18.

Meanwhile, Southern Miss shot the ball at 44.9 percent and reached double-figure three-pointers for the fourth time this season with 10 makes.
