Men’s Golf with a Top Four Spot Through Two Rounds of the Hal Williams Collegiate

SEMMES, Ala. –- Southern Miss men's golf opens the spring leg with a top four finish through 36 holes at the Hal Williams Collegiate in Semmes, Alabama. The Golden Eagles are tied with Louisiana Tech and trails only UAB, Eastern Michigan and No.13 Illinois.
Through two rounds, Benjamin Fernandez is the front runner for the Golden Eagles holding fourth place in the event picking up 12 total birdies with five from the first round and seven through round two. Fernandez went seven under shooting a 67 and improving the second time around to a 66.
Jake Moffitt, after an even 70, played a clean round two with nine pars etching in a two-under 68. The Ben Hoagan November/December award winner is tied for 21st at the event just in front of Junior Tommy Latter. Latter landed himself tied-for 25th shooting a two-under 68 and a one-over 71 in his first appearance of the season.
Supakorn Amornchaichan rounds out the points for the team score with a three-over 73 and closing out the day with a one-under 69. Matthew Javier stays consistent with back-to-back three-over 73 rounds on the day.
The Golden Eagles are the front runners on the course shooting nine-under on par fives and trailing No.13 Illinois by one for birdies on the day with 40. Freshman Moffitt has 10 birdies, four of which come from par-5's, landing him in a five-way tie for sixth with junior Latter close behind at nine birdies.
The Golden Eagles conclude the first of two days at the Hal Williams Collegiate eight-under paired in fourth place with Louisiana Tech with the top three hosting No. 13 Illinois who are 24-under, with a huge 15-under round two, Eastern Michigan with 17-under and the University of Alabama at Birmingham at 14-under.
Round three will begin tomorrow, Feb. 17, at 8:30 a.m. with another shotgun start with Fernandez beginning on hole four, Moffitt on hole five just after Latter, Amornchaichan starting on hole six and Javier on seven.
