Men’s Tennis Sweeps JSU and Battles at Samford in Weekend Matchups

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss men's tennis picked up a strong home result to open the weekend, shutting out Jackson State 4-0 on Friday in Hattiesburg, before closing the slate with a tough 4-0 road loss at Samford on Sunday in Birmingham.
The Golden Eagles came out sharp on Friday and took control early by securing the doubles point with wins at courts one and two. Saheb Sodhi and Eric Perkowski earned a 6-3 decision at No. 1, while Kale Mize and Jay Temming cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2 to put Southern Miss on the board.
From there, Southern Miss carried the momentum into singles and closed out the sweep quickly with three completed straight-set wins. Jose Murariu delivered a strong performance with a 6-2, 6-2 win, and Perkowski followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Matei Varbanciu capped the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win as the Golden Eagles moved to 2-1 on the season.
Sunday's match at Samford featured plenty of fight at the top of the lineup, with both Kale Mize and Jose Murariu pushing their singles matches into a third set as Southern Miss battled deep into the afternoon. The Bulldogs ultimately earned the points needed to clinch the match, but the Golden Eagles kept the pressure on throughout singles play and moved to 2-2 on the season.
