Urban’s Homer Completes Southern Miss Comeback in 8-6 Saturday Win over UCSB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Joey Urban belted a two-run, eighth-inning home run to put Southern Miss ahead for the first time as they rallied for an 8-6 victory over UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles evened the series at a game apiece with the deciding game set for 3 p.m., Sunday. That time was moved back two hours due to expecting lingering rain in the area for later Saturday evening and into Sunday.
Urban led the Golden Eagle 12-hit attack, which included three Southern Miss home runs, with two singles and his first long ball of the campaign.
After trailing by as many as four runs in the contest, Ty Long drew a one-out walk to start the eighth. Following a Kyle Morrison fielder's choice, Urban lifted a A.J. Krodel 0-2 pitch the got caught in the wind some and drifted over the left field wall, banging off the billboard just beyond the fence.
The Golden Eagles were down 6-2, heading into the bottom of the fourth.
Tucker Stockman cut into the lead with a solo home run to left and Long followed with his first collegiate homer two innings later, a two-run shot, to close the gap to 6-5. An RBI single by Matthew Russo tied the scored at 6-apiece in the seventh.
The Gauchos jumped out early with four runs in the third inning on three hits, a walk and a hit batter. UC Santa Barbara opened the stanza by loading the bases on a walk, a single and a hit by pitch, before Jonahtan Mendez knocked in a run with a groundout. Xavier Esquer then added a two-run double before Noah Karliner ended the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Harris finished with three innings in the start, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts but did not figure in the decision.
Southern Miss closed the margin by a couple of runs in the bottom of the frame with two tallies of their own. After Long was hit by a pitch, Urban tallied a one our single to put two runners on base. Russo notched an RBI single to score Long and Ben Higdon drove in Urban with a double.
Nick Husovsky extended the Gauchos lead with a two-run homer, his first, in the fifth.
Josh Och covered the seventh and eighth innings for Southern Miss retiring all six batters he faced, including two strikeouts, to earn the victory and improve to 1-0, while Camden Clark fanned two and got a flyout in the ninth to earn his first save.
