Weeks' 25-Point Night Not Enough, Golden Eagles Fall to South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (13-14, 6-8 Sun Belt) fell victim to a hot-shooting South Alabama (18-7, 8-4 Sun Belt) team on Thursday night, losing 84-78. Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles got big nights from Djahi Binet and Tylik Weeks at Reed Green Coliseum.
Binet picked up a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double after being named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Weeks scored 25 points and dished out a career-high seven assists. Southern Miss made eight three-pointers, stretching its total makes to 23 over the last three games.

How it Happened
South Alabama claimed the first run of the game as it went on a 7-0 stretch to pull ahead by seven at the first media timeout. In that stretch, Southern Miss turned the ball over three times and went scoreless for just over two minutes. Both teams started the game hot from the floor, with Southern Miss hitting five of its first six shot attempts – the Golden Eagles, though, had seven turnovers in the first eight minutes.
Trailing 20-12, Southern Miss got a three-pointer from Curt Lewis to make it a five-point game at the midway point of the half. South Alabama answered with a 9-0 run and a stretch of 6-for-7 shooting to take a 29-15 lead. Tylik Weeks stopped a near five-minute scoring drought with a fastbreak and-one to cut the deficit to 11 with six minutes left in the half.
Izzy Hart followed with a transition three off a Djahi Binet block. That forced South Alabama to take a timeout as Reed Green Coliseum started to come alive. Southern Miss extended it to an 11-1 run thanks to a pair of Izzy Hart three-pointers. Just as quickly as the Golden Eagles clawed back, South Alabama pushed it right back to a nine-point lead.
South Alabama scored with three seconds left in the half, but Weeks took the inbounds pass and drained a half-court shot at the buzzer to make it 42-36 at the half. Southern Miss shot the ball at a 61.1 percent clip in the half and took 10 fewer shot attempts than South Alabama.
Taveras opened the scoring in the second half with a tough take, but South Alabama scored the next six points to jump right back to a 10-point lead. The Golden Eagles tried to slice back into it, but an 8-0 run in just over a minute gave South Alabama its largest lead of the night at 14. The lead eventually reached 16 with 12:48 to play in the game.
Following a successful challenge, Southern Miss went on a 9-0 run with big shots from Curt Lewis and Dalyn Brandon. That made it 63-55 at the 8:41 mark of the second half. The lead went to 12-1 after Weeks finished a layup to make it a 64-58 game at the under-eight media timeout. Southern Miss later cut the South Alabama lead to four on two separate instances. The second was on a Binet jumper that gave him his eighth double-double of the season, but South Alabama scored four quick points to retake an eight-point advantage. Jayden Cooper hit a couple of big shots down the stretch that helped South Alabama back to a double-digit lead and gave him 34 points.
Southern Miss managed to cut the deficit back to four with 17 seconds left, but the Jaguars went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final seconds to secure the six-point win. South Alabama struggled before that, ending the game with 16 missed free throws. Meanwhile, Southern Miss went 22-for-28 from the charity stripe.
