How it Happened
Tylik Weeks and Djahi Binet each had four points as the Golden Eagles overcame a slow start to take an 8-7 lead into the first media timeout. After taking a 7-4 lead, App State went on a scoreless drought over two minutes on 0-for-5 shooting.
Izzy Hart drilled a corner three to give Southern Miss an 11-7 lead, but the Mountaineers kept it within reach after that for the next couple of minutes. Each Golden Eagle basket was followed by an App State basket as Southern Miss held a 15-14 lead roughly halfway through the first half.
Southern Miss then went on a stretch of 1-for-9 shooting, which allowed App State to take an 18-17 lead. Both teams were shooting under 38 percent through the first 14 minutes of the game, while Southern Miss was 1-for-7 from deep. App State took advantage of the poor shooting and took a five-point lead before Southern Miss was able to cut it back to one on a Binet layup with just over five minutes left in the half.
Hart drained another three-pointer to cut the App State advantage to three, but a Luke Wilson jumper put it right back to five. After a tough defensive stand, Djahi Binet went up for a layup with 30 seconds left and got fouled for an and-one. Hart nearly gave Southern Miss a one-point lead at the half on a half-court heave, but it clanked left, and App State took a 29-27 lead into the half.
Southern Miss went the first four minutes in the second half without a field goal, but Weeks and Binet managed to go 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to make up for it. Weeks hit the first field goal of the half to make it 34-32 at the first media timeout. Meanwhile, App State was 1-for-5 from the field to open the half.
Weeks later converted a pair of and-one plays that tied the game with 13:02 to go. Dylan Brumfield answered another App State basket and then hit a free throw that gave Southern Miss a 42-41 lead with 10 minutes on the clock. App State then went on a 14-6 run to pull ahead by seven at the under-four media timeout.
App State pushed the lead to eight after making four-straight buckets, including an emphatic dunk from Michael Marcus Jr. with 2:44 left in the game. The Golden Eagles had cut it to four before Jalen Tot banked in a fade-away three-pointer at the end of the shot clock that pushed the deficit to seven – Tot finished the game 5-for-7 from deep.
That three ended up being the dagger for App State as Southern Miss was unable to come back inside Reed Green Coliseum. Both teams struggled shooting the ball, with App State finishing at 39.2 percent and Southern Miss at 36.2 percent. The Mountaineers shot 47 percent from deep, and the Golden Eagles only shot 17.6 percent.
