Four Finish in Double Figures in Georgia State Loss

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia State (8-12, 5-3 Sun Belt) came back from an 11-point deficit in the first half to win 69-62 over Southern Miss (11-10, 5-4 Sun Belt) on Thursday night at the GSU Convocation Center.

How it Happened
Fallou Diagne made an impact early in his first start, scoring an and-one for Southern Miss' first points of the game. Georgia State and Southern Miss started a combined 4-for-12 from the floor, while the Panthers connected twice from deep.
Tylik Weeks picked up his third foul right before the under-16 timeout, which had the Panthers ahead by five, and Southern Miss' leading scorer in foul trouble early. The Golden Eagles took notice after the timeout and went on an 8-0 run that was sparked by a pair of Curt Lewis three-pointers.
His second forced a Georgia State timeout as Southern Miss forced three turnovers in a two-minute span. The Panthers answered before Lewis drained his third deep ball that cut the Georgia State lead to 16-14 with 11:34 to play in the half.
Southern Miss erupted for a 14-0 run over the next 4:15 as it forced five Georgia State turnovers in that stretch. Brewer Carruth accounted for four points in the run, including a steal-and-score that pushed the Golden Eagle lead to seven. Chiante' Tramble hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to nine, then Dylan Brumfield forced a turnover as the two headed into the under-eight media timeout.
Georgia State followed with a 14-3 run of its own, which matched the run Southern Miss had earlier in the game. The Panthers eventually tied it with just over a minute to go in the half as the Golden Eagles went nearly four minutes between a Carruth corner three and a Brumfield jumper.
Brumfield's jumper with 39 seconds left in the half was enough to give Southern Miss a 32-30 lead at the break. Lewis led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 12 points, while Carruth added nine.
Georgia State opened the second half on an 8-1 run as the Golden Eagles' only point in the first four minutes was a Djahi Binet free throw. The Panthers took a 40-33 lead as the Golden Eagles went on a four-minute scoring drought.
The Panthers went on a 10-0 run to pull ahead by 12 with 12:33 to go in the game. Southern Miss' only points in the half at the 12:20 mark was a Binet and Tegra Izay free throw. Brumfield finally scored the first field goal of the half for the Golden Eagles at the 11:39 mark as Georgia State held a 48-36 lead.
Southern Miss picked up a little momentum with Tylik Weeks, Tramble, and Carruth teaming up to cut the deficit to five. Just as the Golden Eagles silenced the Panther crowd, Malachi Brown hit a three-pointer to put the lead back up to eight with 7:04 to play.
The two traded baskets until the next media timeout with Southern Miss cutting the score to six on a Brumfield layup with 3:23 on the clock. That put Brumfield in double figures with Southern Miss at 7-for-27 from the field in the second half.
The Golden Eagles then went back-to-back three-point plays as Brumfield and Weeks converted an and-one. Weeks cut the score to 61-59 with just over a minute on the clock. That put him in double figures after going scoreless in the first half. After a near Southern I Miss steal on the next inbounds, Georgia State drained a dagger three that put the lead back to seven.
That proved to be the difference maker as Georgia State then made a string of free throws to hold off the Golden Eagles. The Panthers shot 11 more free throws than Southern Miss in the second half, while the road team shot 10-for-32 in the second half from the floor.
