Golden Eagles Stumble at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State (11-9, 4-4 Sun Belt) rallied from a halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon to beat Southern Miss (11-9, 5-3 Sun Belt) 74-69 in San Marcos.
Tylik Weeks scored 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor. Dylan Brumfield added 16 points as he joined Weeks in double figures. As a team, Southern Miss had 14 steals on 18 Texas State turnovers.
Both teams made 20-plus free throws, with Southern Miss shooting 83.3 percent from the charity stripe. Texas State shot 47.6 percent from the floor in the game and went 6-for-13 from deep; meanwhile, Southern Miss went 3-for-15 from deep.

How it Happened
Southern Miss and Texas State started a combined 2-for-9 from the floor, with the Bobcats having both makes. The Golden Eagles struggled to find a good look while also turning the ball over four times in the first four minutes.
Tylik Weeks hit a pair of free throws coming out of the first media timeout that got Southern Miss on the board. The Golden Eagles then hit a stretch of four-straight makes to take an 11-7 lead. Izzy Hart followed that with back-to-back steals that resulted in four points.
Texas State answered with an 8-0 run just after Djahi Binet gave Southern Miss some noise with a monster slam. The Bobcats led by as many as four after their run, but Binet and Carruth scored for Southern Miss to retake the lead. Texas State once again took the lead with a minute left in the half before Hart hit a step-back jumper to give Southern Miss a 28-27 lead at the half.
Weeks led all scorers in the first half with 10 points, while Binet went 3-for-4 from the floor for seven points. Southern Miss had 10 steals in the first half, marking the sixth time its reached at least 10 in a game this season.
Texas State opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 36-28 lead in the first two minutes, forcing the Golden Eagles to burn an early timeout. Southern Miss settled the Strahan Arena crowd as Weeks and Dylan Brumfield scored back-to-back points to make it a four-point game.
Southern Miss found its defensive groove as it kept Texas State scoreless for 3:50 midway through the half. In that stretch, Weeks and Brumfield combined for a 5-0 run to make it 40-37 in favor of the Bobcats with 12:25 left in the game. In that run, the Golden Eagles forced four Texas State turnovers, which put Southern Miss at 15 points off turnovers at that point.
The Golden Eagles went on a stretch of over four minutes with no field goals, but did manage to go 6-for-6 from the charity stripe during that span. It kept it at a four-point game at the under-eight media timeout. The drought stretched over five minutes after the timeout with the Bobcats pushing their lead to seven.
The drought continued into the final media timeout with Southern Miss not making a field goal for nearly eight minutes. That let Texas State take a nine-point lead with 3:53 to go. Brewer Carruth broke the streak at nine minutes after converting an and-one. That made it a nine-point game with just over two minutes to play.
Southern Miss scored a flurry of points down the stretch with Weeks cutting the Bobcat advantage to seven with 40 seconds on the clock. Texas State made five three throws to close out the game as Brumfield hit a three-pointer as the buzzer went off in Strahan Arena.
