Volleyball Earns Two Wins at Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament

HOUSTON, Texas – Southern Miss volleyball opened the Molly Howard-Gerwig Memorial Tournament with two wins Friday at Sharp Gym, defeating Bethune-Cookman in four sets before sweeping host Houston Christian.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles (4-1) topped Bethune-Cookman 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16. Southern Miss closed strong in the first set before the Wildcats answered to even the match in the second. The Golden Eagles regrouped with a .310 hitting percentage in the third and finished the fourth on a 6-1 run to secure the win. Sadie McAda powered the attack with 21 kills and 19 digs, while Elly Stewart and Brynn Botkin chipped in 10 kills each. Setter Morgen Durgens guided the offense with 42 assists and two aces, and Sunni Sheppard anchored the defense with 18 digs. Kaylee Lowther added four aces as Southern Miss totaled 10 from the service line.
Southern Miss carried that momentum into the nightcap, sweeping Houston Christian (0-5) 25-18, 25-14, 25-18. The Golden Eagles took control early, hit .409 in the second set, and closed out the sweep with 18 kills in the third. Botkin led with 12 kills on a .522 hitting percentage, followed by McAda with 11 kills and nine digs. Stewart added nine kills on a .571 mark, while Durgens dished out 33 assists. Sheppard again led the back row with 10 digs.
Southern Miss finishes out their final matchup of the weekend against St. Thomas tomorrow, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m.
