Golden Eagles Sit in Fifth Through 36 Holes at Diane Thomason Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Southern Miss women's golf team shot up the leaderboard on Monday at the Diane Thomason Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. The Golden Eagles finished day one in fifth place after sitting in seventh following the first round this morning.Â
Louise Cuyvers continued to golf at a high level as the sophomore opened the tournament with a two-under 70 in the morning round and sat in second place heading into the afternoon round. Liv Romer and Taylor Trible both fired a seven-over 79, while Alma Betoret shot an eight-over 80 in her season debut. Savannah Van Gaalen rounded out the lineup with an 84 to cap the opening 18 holes of play.Â
It was Betoret in the afternoon round that got the Golden Eagles going. The junior registered a one-over 73 to climb up 31 spots on the leaderboard and into the top 20. Cuyvers shot a four-over 76 in her second round and sits in fourth place — she is one stroke behind Ella Greenberg (South Dakota) and Katie Ruge (Omaha) and six strokes behind Lauren Greeny (Montana State).Â
Trible moved up the leaderboard thanks to a three-over 75 in the afternoon. She posted one birdie in each round, and Cuyvers enjoyed six on the day. Van Gaalen matched Betoret's afternoon round with a one-over 73 and shot up over 33 spots on the leaderboard. Romer posted another seven-over 79 to end day one for Southern Miss.Â
Southern Miss improved its afternoon score by 11 strokes after a nine-over 297 in the second round. The Golden Eagles a 308 as a team in the opening round at Finkbine Golf Course. Montana State leads the field with Iowa, Missouri State, South Dakota and Southern Miss rounding out the top five.
