HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed starter pitcher JB Middleton (Yazoo City, Miss.) earned second team All-America honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings in an announcement Friday morning by the organization.
Middleton finished his first season as a Golden Eagle starter with a 10-1 record and a 2.31 ERA. He also fanned 122 and walked just 25 in 105 1/3 innings during the year, while only allowing 65 hits. The junior currently ranks No. 2 in WHIP (0.85), fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.55), sixth in strikeouts, ninth in wins and 10th in ERA nationally. Heading into this July's MLB First-Year Player Draft, Middleton holds the distinction of being the No. 34 prospect.
This is the third All-America honor for the three-year Golden Eagle pitcher, who also earned first team accolades from both Perfect Game and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association earlier this week.
First recognized in 1949, the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-America teams are selected by the ABCA All-America & Coach of the Year committee, which is chaired by Brian Green of Wichita State University. The committee also includes Mitch Canham (Oregon State University), Chris Curry (University of Arkansas at Little Rock), Dean Ehehalt (Monmouth University), Jeff Mercer (Indiana University), Brian O'Connor (Mississippi State University), Jim Penders (University of Connecticut), and Butch Thompson (Auburn University).
This marks the eighth straight year that the Golden Eagles have had at least one player make one of the three All-American squads by the ABCA/Rawlings.
